What Advice Do You Have For The New Muslims Who Recently Left Their Previous Lives of Criminal Behaviour, Drugs and Alcohol by Shaykh Dr. ʿArafāt ibn Ḥasan al-Muḥammadī

Pivotal Quote

❝You must encourage them to continue learning the religion of Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى) because the affairs of īmān (faith) are statements and actions. As soon they enter Islām, you must work with them so that they learn the prayer, the manners of zakāh, the pillars of Islām and the fundamentals of īmān and they should learn whatever else from the religion of Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى) that is compulsory upon them.❞

Question:

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى) do good to you oh our Shaykh, we have no students of knowledge in our country but by the virtue, superiority and blessings of Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى), our gathering of brothers and sisters has been increasing lately. So many of the original inhabitants of the land around us have become Muslims and have left all kinds of criminal actions, including using drugs, drinking liquor and whatever else that is related to that of evil actions and refuge is sought from Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى).  Can we ask you for advice regarding those new Muslims dear honorable Shaykh?

Answer:

As long as they have become Muslims and have entered the religion of Islām and have left all kinds of ugly habits and customs that they were upon, then you must teach them to thank and praise Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى) for such blessing. You must encourage them to continue learning the religion of Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى) because the affairs of īmān (faith) are statements and actions. As soon they enter Islām, you must work with them so that they learn the prayer, the manners of zakāh, the pillars of Islām and the fundamentals of īmān and they should learn whatever else from the religion of Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى) that is compulsory upon them.

You should also warn them of shirk (polytheism) and warn them of all the major sins and there is no doubt that all this necessitates that the person be upon knowledge and there needs to be a student of knowledge amongst you because leaving such affairs may lead those that entered Islām to go back to kufr (disbelief).

So from the greatest reasons for a Muslim to be strong upon Islām is to be upon knowledge and to ponder upon the Qur’ān. Meaning they should read, recite and learn the Qur’ān and learn the sciences of the Qur’ān. Alḥamdu lillāh, those that left off what they used to be upon of sins and evil actions, there is no doubt that this is a great affair for them and this is something that each and every Muslim should be happy for and this is why you have to strive and be diligent in teaching them the Qur’ān and the Sunnah according to the understanding of the previous predecessors.  And Allāh knows best.
