Is It Permissible To Add To The Authentic Duʿāʾ al-Qunūt That Was Reported From The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) by Shaykh Dr. ʿAbdullah ibn Ṣulfīq aẓ-Ẓafīrī

Pivotal Quote

“Yes, it is permissible to say more than what is reported that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) to have said because he (صلى الله عليه وسلم) when he was teaching al-Ḥassan the duʿāʾ of Qunūt, he told him to say the likes of this, and he did not tell him do not say anything else. When he taught him what to say, he did not say, ‘Say this and nothing else.'”

Question:

Is it permissible in Duʿāʾ al-Qunūt to make duʿāʾ with more than what is reported the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) to have made or do we have to say only what he (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said and nothing more?

Answer:

Yes, it is permissible to say more than what is reported that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) to have said because he (صلى الله عليه وسلم) when he was teaching al-Ḥassan the duʿāʾ of Qunūt, he told him to say the likes of this, and he did not tell him do not say anything else. When he taught him what to say, he did not say, “Say this and nothing else.” So he was telling him that this is one of the things that may be said, not the only thing that may be said.

In making Duʿāʾ al-Qunūt however, a person should not make it very long, nor should a person be singing and trying to make it rhyme, because this is bidʿah.
