While Fasting Is It Extreme To Ensure There Is No Trace of Water In The Mouth After Making Wuḍūʾ by Shaykh Sālim ibn ‘Abdullah Bāmiḥriz

Pivotal Quote

“But even the fasting person gets water in his mouth and perhaps some of that water may be swallowed unintentionally. And if that is the case, then it does not break his fast

Question:

During fasting, some people go to extremes in spitting after washing their mouths in wuḍūʾ or after brushing their teeth with toothpaste because they want to make sure no traces of water whatsoever is left in their mouth. What is your advice regarding this?

Answer:

This is from the whispering of shayṭān. If a person reaches this extent that he is so paranoid, then let him not brush his teeth during the daytime. Let him brush his teeth before Fajr after eating his saḥūr and before Fajr so that the shayṭān does not attack him from this angle.

Also, the fasting person is bound to get some water in his mouth while making wuḍūʾ. Yes, we have the ḥadīth of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), “Go to extremes in washing your mouth unless when fasting.” But even the fasting person gets water in his mouth and perhaps some of that water may be swallowed unintentionally. And if that is the case, then it does not break his fast.
