Question:

A person embraced Islām but was not very diligent about seeking knowledge. They are now older and want to seek knowledge. What books and topics would you recommend they start with?

Answer:

Alḥamdu lillāh, in the past few weeks we had the opportunity to sit with Shaykh Al-ʿAllāmah, the Muḥadith of Al-Madīnah, Shaykh ʿAbdul Musin Al-ʿAbbād (حفظه الله) and I asked this very question.

According to the answer of the Shaykh (حفظه الله), the recommended books are,

  1. ‘The Three Fundamental Principles’,
  2. ‘Ad-Durūs Al-Muhimmah (Important Lessons For Every Muslim)’ by Shaykh Ibn Bāz(رحمه الله), of which there are a number of explanations available. That is a good start.

Likewise, with regards to the prayer, there is,

  1. ‘Ṣifat As Ṣalāh’ by Shaykh Al-Albānī or Shaykh Ibn Al-‘Uthaymīn (رحمهما الله)
  2. Also, I advise you to study a book written by Shaykh Anwar Wright (حفظه الله), ‘A Comprehensive Guide For The New Muslim’ which is probably one of the best books that was written by an English speaker for an English-speaking audience. That book is very comprehensive and deals with matters of belief, jurisprudence, wūḍūʿ, ṣalāh, etiquettes, and other than that. In it there are important pieces of advice for Muslims who are living in the West. May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى) bless us all with beneficial knowledge and righteous actions. Āmin.
