Can A Woman Correct Her Husband’s Recitation Aloud In Ṣalaḥ by Shaykh Dr. ʿAbdullah ibn Ṣulfīq aẓ-Ẓafīrī

Pivotal Quote

“With regards to making a mistake in the recitation, if he is reading from a sūrah that she has memorised, then she corrects him and there is no harm in this.

Question:

Shaykh, may Allāh bless you, with regards to me leading my wife and family in prayer, sometimes I forget some of the verses and my wife reminds me of them. Is it permissible for her to remind me aloud in the prayer?

Answer:

Yes, she can correct you and correct a mistake, and there is no harm in this. If the individual who is praying makes a mistake, for example by adding something in the prayer [such as] a sajdah or a rakʿah or rukūʿ or he leaves something out, then what is from the Sunnah is that the woman claps, as what has come in ḥadīth, and the men say SubḥānAllāh. What is meant by clapping here, is that she actually slaps her hand on her thigh so as to notify him that he has made a mistake.
