Can A Medical Worker Who Wears A Protective Suit Break His Fast and Drink Water If He Is Overcome By Severe Thirst by Shaykh Dr. ʿAbdullah ibn Ṣulfīq aẓ-Ẓafīrī

Pivotal Quote

“If he feels like halāk (death or destruction) is imminent, then he may break his fast. However, this individual must engage in the means that will reduce him being thirsty.”

Question:

One of the brothers says that he is required to wear a protective suit because he works in a hospital, and due to the fact that he is wearing this protective suit he is overcome with severe thirst, especially during fasting days. Is it permissible for him to drink water if he reaches a level that is unbearable?

Answer:

If he feels like halāk (death or destruction) is imminent, then he may break his fast. However, this individual must engage in the means that will reduce him being thirsty. So for example, if it is not compulsory that he wears the suit, then he does not wear it. But if he must wear it, then he seeks out cooler places to be in. And generally speaking, if he feels like he is on the verge of destruction or death due to that thirst that is unbearable, then he can break his fast. And Allāh knows best.
