Buying Food Prepared on The Holidays of The Non-Muslims by Shaykh Dr. ʿAbdullah ibn Ṣulfīq aẓ-Ẓafīrī

Pivotal Quote

“So, any food that has been prepared for a non-Muslim holiday, then we are not allowed to eat it, whether that food is prepared the day before the holiday, the day of, or it remains several days after.”

Question:

According to the Gregorian calendar, there are holidays in this month and the coming month that are particular to the non-Muslims. There are foods for sale in the marketplaces that are particular to these holidays. Although there is no necessary relationship between the food and the holidays, is there any problem with eating and buying these foods or is doing so considered one of the ways of imitating the disbelievers?

Answer:

Every food that has been prepared for the celebration of a holiday of the disbelievers is not permissible for a Muslim to eat. Rather, doing so is a way of participating in their holidays with them and this is not permissible for the Muslim. So, any food that has been prepared for a non-Muslim holiday, then we are not allowed to eat it, whether that food is prepared the day before the holiday, the day of, or it remains several days after. Any food that is prepared for the occasion of the holiday of the non-Muslims is not permissible for us to eat.
