Gathering The Brothers For Football and Occasionally Giving An Islāmic Reminder by Shaykh Dr. ʿAbdullah ibn Ṣulfīq aẓ-Ẓafīrī

Pivotal Quote

“The aṣl (origin) with this is that it is permissible. There is nothing wrong with getting together and playing football and having a reminder…”

Question:

Can we gather the brothers in the masjid compound to play football and then when they are done, we pray ṣalāh and give a small reminder, or is this from the way of the Ikhwānis?

Answer:

The aṣl (origin) with this is that it is permissible. There is nothing wrong with getting together and playing football and having a reminder. Especially playing any sport that is permissible, like playing football, there is no problem with this, as long as the sport is permissible.

And the religious reminder after this sport, there is nothing wrong in this, as long as they do not become coupled together, such that every time you go out to play football, there is always a religious talk. It should not be something done every time [when] getting together.

Secondly, any leisure or sports should not cause people to be negligent about their ṣalāh and praying on time, or any other obligations upon them in Islām.  And Allāh knows best.
