Question:
Many people stay awake after Fajr looking for signs of Laylatul Qadr. If people see these signs which are mentioned in the Sunnah, can they say for certain that the previous night was Laylatul Qadr?
Answer:
No, the people cannot say with certainty that any night was Laylatul Qadr, even though we do have signs which are mentioned in the Sunnah which can indicate that more likely this was Laylatul Qadr, but we cannot say last night was Laylatul Qadr.
At any rate, the Muslim is to work hard during all of the last ten nights of Ramaḍān. If a person were to see some of the signs mentioned in the Sunnah on the following morning, what are they going to do now? Be lazy for the remainder of the ten nights and not perform acts of worship because they think they have coincided with Laylatul Qadr? This is not benefiting!
What is encouraged in the Sunnah, in the statement of the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) to, “seek it out during the ten nights”, meaning all of the ten nights. And even if we happened to see some of these signs, we should not say for certain that the previous night was Laylatul Qadr, much less stop seeking out the signs of Laylatul Qadr, but we should work hard to seek out Layatul Qadr for the entire ten nights.
